Santorini, part 6

We wanted to try this one other restaurant for breakfast. My man took (again) an omelette, I had pancakes. Look at them!!!

We had booked us a semiprivate caldera cruise. They picked us up from our hotel and took us to the harbor of Oia where we took off. 

I have to say that it was an amazing day. The sceneries, the turquoise water, the dinner on board, the sunset by the sea... I know I've been using word "breathtaking" quite a lot in these blog posts, but this cruise was nothing short of breathtaking. 

Despite the dinner on board, we were a little hungry in the evening. We wanted to get a little snack and figured that some tiny gyros portions would be perfect. Well. It was very good but not very tiny portion. It had almost one kilogram of meat to share. Burp.

Halusimme kokeilla yhtä toista ravintolaa aamupalalla. Mieheni otti (jälleen) munakkaan, minä otin pannukakkuja. Katsokaa nyt niitä!!!

Olimme buukanneet itsellemme puoli-yksityisen risteilyn Santorinin edustalle. Meidät noudettiin hotellilta ja vietiin Oian satamaan josta lähdimme liikkeelle. 

Minun on sanottava että päivä oli aivan mieletön. Maisemat, turkoosi vesi, laivalla syöty illallinen, auringonlasku merellä... Tiedän että olen käyttänyt sanaa "henkeäsalpaava" melko usein näissä blogikirjoituksissani, mutta tämä risteily ei ollut muuta kuin henkeäsalpaava. 

Huolimatta laivalla syödystä illallisesta olimme illalla vähän nälkäisiä. Halusimme pientä iltapalaa ja päätimme että pienet annokset gyrosta olisivat täydelliset. No. Ruoka oli erittäin hyvää, mutta ei kovinkaan pieni annoskooltaan. Siinä oli melkein kilo lihaa jaettavaksi. Röyh. 

Santorini, part 5

We spent a lot of time just walking around Fira and going to smaller parts of the city. I'm not entire sure if we even were in the same city anymore, but we did enjoy the sceneries and overall atmosphere tremendously.

And yes, people do get married in Santorini! I played my part of paparazzi and got two couples on the price of one!

Our hotel's cleaning lady was awesome. She did these to us every day!

And yes, for two night in a row we went to dinner to the same meat lover's restaurant. I took T-bone steak on both times - why fix what ain't broken?

Vietimme paljon aikaa ihan vain kävelemällä ympäri Firaa ja käymällä kaupungin pienemmissä osissa. En ole aivan varma olimmeko enää edes samassa kaupungissa, mutta nautimme maisemista ja yleisestä tunnelmasta suunnattomasti. 

Ja kyllä, ihmiset menevät naimisiin Santorinilla! Leikin paparazzia ja sain kaksi paria yhden hinnalla!

Hotellimme siivooja oli aivan mahtava. Hän teki meille näitä joka päivä!

And yes, for two night in a row we went to dinner to the same meat lover's restaurant. I took T-bone steak on both times - why fix what ain't broken? 

Ja kyllä, menimme kahtena perättäisenä iltana illalliselle samaan lihansyöjien ravintolaan. Otin molemmilla kerroilla T-luupihvin - miksi korjata sellaista mikä ei ole rikki?

Santorini, part 4

Again we went to our favorite restaurant for breakfast. I took waffle with praline and strawberries, my man took an omelette. My waffle was good, but I have to say that the one with yogurt and honey is better.

As I've said many times, Santorini was an amazing place. Extremely beautiful, and had all the things you see in postcards. We took our ATV and drove to Oia. We didn't see the famous sunset of Oia, but we did find a pool. Very relaxing.

We did also walk around Oia since we were there. It was the postcard sceneries. I barely could believe my eyes. The sun was searing hot, there were lot of tourists but man it was breathtaking. 

For dinner we went to this local taverna that was highly recommended in Google. And yes, they were very good. More traditional greek food, but very good fish. The owner was a sweet older man and he demanded to take a picture of us (and asked us to put it to TripAdvisor. We did.).

Menimme jälleen aamupalalle suosikkiravintolaamme. Otin vohvelin suklaalevitteen ja mansikoiden kera, ja mieheni otti munakkaan. Vohvelini oli hyvä, mutta on sanottava että aiempi vohveli jugurtilla ja hunajalla on parempaa. 

Olen sanonut aiemminkin että Santorini on uskomaton paikka. Erittäin kaunis, ja siellä on kaikki ne asiat joita näet postikortissa. Otimme mönkkärimme ja ajoimme Oiaan. Emme nähneet Oian kuuluisaa auringonlaskua, mutta löysimme altaan. Hyvin rentouttavaa. 

Kävelimme myös ympäriinsä Oiaa kun kerran olimme siellä. Maisemat olivat postikortista. Saatoin hädin tuskin uskoa silmiäni. Aurinko oli polttavan kuuma ja siellä oli paljon turisteja, mutta kuinka henkeäsalpaavaa siellä olikaan. 

Illalliselle menimme paikalliseen tavernaan jota kovasti suositeltiin Googlessa. Ja kyllä, arvostelut olivat oikeassa. Enemmän perinteistä kreikkalaista ruokaa, mutta erittäin hyvää kalaa. Omistaja oli suloinen vanhempi mies joka vaati saada ottaa meistä kuvan (ja pyysi meitä laittamaan sen TripAdvisoriin. Näin teimme.). 

Santorini, part 3

We decided to rent an ATV for couple of days to make it easier to roam the island and getting to know the areas better. The rent included also the helmets, but apparently my head is tiny and none of the adult helmets fit me. So I got a kiddie helmet instead. It was very pink. Oh and how can you tell tourists from locals? Only tourists (well, some) wear helmets. The locals are happily driving even big bikes without any protective gear, not even helmets.

First we drove to see the ancient ruins of Thera. It was very high up the hill, and the sceneries were pretty damn cool. It's amazing what the ancient civilizations were able to create! 

Then we decided to drive to explore one of the beaches, Perissa Beach. Its sand was this famous black volcanic sand. Freaking hot to the touch! 

Sceneries while driving down the coast line were just breathtaking. 

We wanted to see the famous lighthouse. 

All the flowers were blooming, and the scents were intoxicating. 

For dinner we went to this one restaurant that was very recommended in Google, and was said that it is a place for meat lovers. Yes. They were right. I took smoked pork, and my man took T-bone steak. Huge portions and crazy good.

We also wanted to try dessert. Holy moly the chocolate soufflé was amazing. We overate so much that I still don't know to this date how we managed to get back to the hotel!

Päätimme vuokrata mönkkärin pariksi päiväksi jotta saaren tutkiminen ja alueisiin tutustuminen olisi helpompaa. Vuokraan sisältyi myös kypärät, mutta ilmeisesti minulla on pieni pää ja mikään aikuisten kypäristä ei ollut minulle sopiva. Niinpä sain lasten kypärän. Se oli hyvin pinkki. Niin ja mistä erottaa turistit paikallisista? Vain turistit (no, osa) käyttää kypäriä. Paikalliset ajelevat iloisesti isojakin pyöriä ilman mitään suojavarusteita, jopa ilman kypäriä. 

Ensimmäiseksi menimme katsomaan Thera muinaisia raunioita. Se oli todella korkealla kukkulan päällä, ja maisemat olivat huikeita. Ihan mieletöntä mitä kaikkea muinaiset sivilisaatiot osasivat luoda! 

Sitten päätimme käydä tutkimassa yhtä rannoista, Perissa Beachia. Sen hiekka oli kuuluisaa mustaa tuliperäistä hiekkaa. Todella kuumaa kun kosketit sitä!

Maisemat rannikkoa pitkin ajellessa olivat henkeäsalpaavia. 

Halusimme nähdä kuuluisan majakan. 

Kaikki kukkaset olivat kukassa, ja tuoksut olivat huumaavia. 

Illalliseksi menimme ravintolaan jota oli kovasti suositeltu Googlessa, ja siitä oli myös sanottu että se on paikka lihansyöjille. Kyllä. Ihmiset olivat oikeassa. Minä otin savustettua possua, ja mieheni otti T-luu pihvin. Jättiannokset ja järkyttävän hyvää. 

Halusimme myös kokeilla jälkiruokaa. Jumaleissön suklaa sufflee oli mielettömän hyvää. Ylensöimme niin paljon etten vieläkään tiedä miten onnistuimme pyörimään takaisin hotellille! 

Santorini, part 2

On our first morning in Santorini we chose to go and have breakfast in a restaurant that was widely popular. It was extremely pleasant and we ended up having breakfast there three or four times! They had a pianist who played very well and we both enjoyed this place tremendously. 

As we all know my love for pancakes and waffles, I had to take a waffle with honey, yogurt and walnuts. And it was awesome!! The dough itself was very tasty, and there is no yogurt like greek yogurt. 

Then it was time to explore the city. Our hotel was in Fira. We walked up and down the narrow streets, stopped to take pictures from the top and just enjoyed ourselves. One note to all ladies though: if you travel to Santorini, don't bother packing high heels. The streets are either cobbled or in such a bad condition that you can't walk there with high heels without breaking your ankle or your neck. Not to mention that the pedestrians are not in high regard among greek drivers... And it makes sense if you pack reasonable hiking sandals with you. They might not be pretty, but trust me, they will be worth it.

When in Greece, you gotta have gyros.

Some of the restaurants with the best views are just rip-offs. They charge you 10% extra for just sitting at a table because of the view. Food is worse than crappy, service almost non-existing, crazy prices and probably the thinnest milkshake I've ever had. But, we knew all of these and we just wanted to sit down for a while and enjoy the sceneries. And yes, all the prices in the menu are in euros :D :D :D 

For dinner we went to one of these places with the best views but with proper reviews of their food. And yes, it wasn't that bad at all! And the view was stunning. There are certain things you gotta do while you're in Santorini, and taking in the sunset is one of the things. 

And when we came back to our room, we had this waiting for us. How sweet!!!

Ensimmäisenä aamuna Santorinilla päätimme mennä aamupalalle ravintolaan joka oli varsin suosittu. Se oli erittäin miellyttävä ja päädyimmekin syömään aamiaista siellä kolme tai neljä kertaa! Ravintolassa oli pianisti joka oli varsin pätevä ja nautimme molemmat paikasta todella paljon. 

Koska kaikki tiedämme rakkauteni pannukakkuihin ja vohveleihin, minun oli aivan pakko ottaa vohveli hunajalla, jugurtilla ja pähkinöillä. Ja se oli mahtavaa!! Taikina itsessään oli todella maukasta, eikä ole kreikkalaista jugurttia maukkaampaa jugurttia. 

Sitten oli aika tutustua kaupunkiin. Hotellimme oli Firassa. Kävelimme ylös ja alas kapeita katuja, pysähdyimme ottamaan kuvia huipulta ja vain nautimme. Tärkeä huomio naisille: jos matkustat Santoriiniin, älä suotta vaivaudu pakkaamaan mukaan korkokenkiä. Kadut ovat joko mukulakiveä tai niin huonossa kunnossa ettei korkkareilla voi kävellä ilman että katkaiset joko nilkkasi tai niskasi. Puhumattakaan siitä että jalankulkijat eivät ole kovin korkealla kreikkalaisten kuskien arvojärjestyksessä... Ja on järkevää pakata järkevät vaellussandaalit mukaasi. Ne eivät ehkä ole nätit, mutta luota minuun, ne ovat sen arvoiset. 

Kun on Kreikassa, pitää syödä gyrosta. 

Jotkut ravintoloista, joista on parasta näköala, ovat ihan puhtaita riistopaikkoja. Ne veloittavat 10% ylimääräistä ihan vain siitä että istut pöydässä josta on näköala. Ruoka on surkeampaa kuin roskaa, palvelu on lähes olematonta, hinnat ovat järkyttävän kalliit ja pirtelö oli luultavasti ohuin mitä olen koskaan maistanut. Mutta, me olimme tietoisia näistä seikoista ja halusimmekin vain istahtaa hetkeksi alas ja nauttia maisemista. Ja kyllä, hinnat ruokalistassa ovat euroissa :D :D :D 

Illalliselle menimme yhteen näistä ravintoloista joista on parhaat näköalat, mutta kohtuulliset arvostelut ruuasta. Ja kyllä, se ei ollut yhtään hassumpaa! Ja näköala oli mieletön. Kun olet Santorinissa, on tiettyjä asioita joita sinun täytyy tehdä, ja auringonlaskusta nauttiminen on yksi niistä. 

Ja kun tulimme takaisin huoneeseemme, meitä odotti tämä. Kuinka suloista!!!

Santorini, part 1

As I mentioned in the last post, we were going on a holiday for a week and traveling to Santorini, Greece. That we did, and now it's time starting to write down some memories and experiences. We accidentally wore matching shirts on our departure day :D

Flight was direct and smooth. We took a taxi to our hotel, although the driver did leave us to the side of a bigger road. The roads in general were very narrow and most of them didn't have any names so it was more or less impossible for the driver to get directly in front of the hotel. The hotel itself was nice. Nothing fancy, but good enough and very pink room!

We did have a terrace, and we did have great plans of eating breakfast in our little terrace. As it turned out, this remained only a plan as we ended up eating breakfast in a restaurant every morning. 

On our first evening in Santorini we went out to eat to this little local taverna. We looked up the reviews from Google and found out it was indeed very pleasant little taverna with good food. 

As it was already pretty late, we did only a little sight seeing. Santorini by night was pretty cool!

Kuten mainitsin edellisessä kirjoituksessani, olimme menossa lomalle viikoksi ja matkustamassa Santoriniin, Kreikkaan. Näin tapahtui, ja nyt on aika kirjoittaa joistakin muistoista ja kokemuksista. Meillä oli vahingossa mätsäävät paidat lähtöpäivänä :D 

Lento oli suora ja pehmeä. Otimme taksin hotellille, vaikkakin kuljettaja jätti meidät isomman tien sivuun. Tiet yleisesti ottaen olivat todella kapeita ja useimmilla niistä ei ollut nimiä joten kuljettajan oli enemmän tai vähemmän mahdotonta päästä suoraan hotellin eteen. Hotelli itsessään oli mukava. Ei luksus, mutta riittävän hyvä ja huone oli erittäin pinkki! 

Meillä oli terassi, ja meillä oli suuret suunnitelmat siitä että söisimme aamupalaa pienellä terassillamme. Tämä jäi kuitenkin vain suunnitelmaksi, sillä päädyimme syömään aamupalaa ravintolassa joka aamu. 

Ensimmäisenä iltana Santorinilla menimme ulos syömään pikkuiseen paikalliseen tavernaan. Katsoimme Googlesta arvostelut ja olemme samaa mieltä siitä että taverna oli kuin olikin miellyttävä ja ruoka oli hyvää. 

Koska oli melko myöhä, katselimme vain vähäsen maisemia. Santorini yöaikaan oli aika siisti!
