Shrinks and deep waters

I'm again swimming in deep waters. Somehow this relocation thing doesn't seem to get any easier, some days on the contrary. Even though I try to concentrate on the positive things, which are in truth plenty, this country and the loneliness are eating me up alive. Several months ago, it was in February, I went to a doctor to get a new prescription for the sleeping pills. She didn't really speak English, but she showed me a letter that was sent to her by a psychiatric. In the letter the psychiatric explained that she treats mostly patients suffering from extreme cases of culture shock, and she was asking if there are doctors in Munich fluent in English that would be willing to call out as being able to help expats that don't speak German. The doctor at that time gave me a prescription for the sleeping pills, but she also said that maybe I would need more someone to talk to instead of sleeping pills.

I forgot the letter for many months as my sleeping got better and overall I started feeling better. At work I've done post mortems with my team and each one of us got to give their feedback how the production went, what worked and what not. When it was my time, it was impossible to avoid the topic how alone also my studio left me from the very first day. After I had finished my talk, one of my team members looked at me and said that he didn't understand how I managed to survive being as alone as I were. And I almost started crying. It was horrible to hear this from someone outsider, a young guy who is active and social.

After that post mortem I've mostly just cried. I don't know how it's been this difficult now, and I don't have words anymore to describe it all. Some time ago I was talking to Finland and the idea came that maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to go and talk with someone who knows what's going on. I dug up the contact information of this psychiatric and made an appointment. I had my appointment yesterday and the psychiatric is an awesome lady. I felt instant connection, and it was very easy to talk to her. First session was mostly just going through my background, what has led me to this situation and what am I doing here and why I think it would be good to talk with her. She did say that she will be able to help me with practical things, like finding "my people" for, and finding some help with taking care of the puppies. And I started crying, because this country and this city has no empathy, no sympathy and no mercy, and for the first time someone was being friendly. However, I am crazy scared of talking to her because I'm afraid I will start crying, and I'm not sure if I can make it stop anymore. I have next appointment next week, and she gave me homework. I have to think about 10 things that make me awesome, 5 things that are fucked up here and finally I have to do something cool and nice and fun for me. I already started but in reverse order: I bought myself tickets to this Fast and Furious Live Action Show that I want to go and see.

I'm crazy scared of next week and Christmas. Next week I will have my birthday and I will spend it here, in Germany, alone and most likely miserable. I love Christmas, and I would love to really celebrate it and cook and bake and decorate, but instead I'm alone and most likely miserable in Germany without a proper oven to cook. I know that these are only few days, birthday lasts one day and Christmas few days and then it's over, but for some reason it's impossible NOT to be crazy scared. How will life ever get easier? How will I ever find my place? How will I ever stop crying?

*****

Errands, lunches and screenings

Last weekend was pretty busy again. I had to run some errands, met a friend, had an art thing arranged by my German teacher... I also did some crafting, but it's work in progress still so no picture yet to be posted. Perhaps next weekend I'll finish it. Anyways, I met my Finnish friend and we went for a lunch in a nice Greek restaurant near her home. It was ok, and the tsatziki was very good!

The art thing was like an opening of an exhibition at a galleria... It was pretty cool. I didn't hangout there too long as I don't really like to mingle, but I did go and had a talk with a cool English lady.

On Monday evening we had a screening of our production in its current stage. Animation has been now completed, and it was really cool to see everything coming alive! I'm very lucky to have had a team as great as mine is. Thank you guys for making this happen!

*****

Fabrics and sunshine

I've been meaning to check out couple of fabrics store already for a very, very long time ago, and finally now on Saturday I had time to do that. First one was a disappointment, but the second one was a great surprise! It was pretty big. Not like Eurokangas in Finland, but big enough. This will do just fine.

I did find the last missing fabric for my new winter jacket. I've been playing with an idea of a new jacket, and then I saw the jacket Daenerys is wearing in the last season of Game of Thrones when she goes beyond The Wall, and then it hit me. That will be the inspiration for my jacket, and I will shamelessly copy some of the ideas from that jacket. These are the fabrics for it.

It's been couple of very sunny and very warm days here. I've been feeling again very gloomy, despite the weather. As I've said, relocation is not always easy. Sometimes it hits you harder than other times, and of course the jet lag and problems with sleeping because of that have taken their toll as well. But despite that and because I know that in Finland it's snowing and storming, I have to post this just to brag how nice it's here!

*****

Movies and nails

I've been going to the movies lately as you all know it's my hobby and living. I've seen the new version of the Murder In The Orient Express, and I have to say I enjoyed it a lot. It was very well made, actors' performances stunning and it didn't have a single thing that hadn't been thought out. The only annoying thing was that in the screening there were a lot of retired people and they couldn't control their bladders so they were going to the toilet all the time, and they moved naturally very slow :D

I also went and saw the Justice League. Unfortunately it sucked really bad. Of course I was still suffering from jet lag on Sunday when I saw it, but I fell asleep in the middle of it, and I NEVER fall asleep when watching movies, not even with the crappiest ones. I have said this before, I'll say it again: making movie without lights doesn't make it dark and gloomy, it just makes it black. If you wanna go dark, you have to go all the way. Take lessons from the series The Killing. Or one of the best movies of all time, Se7en.

I did also go and buy some Christmas lights. I like the end result.

And cherry on the cake I made myself new nails over the weekend. Blue for Miss Blue, and blue for Finland's the 100th independence anniversary that's due in few weeks. And of course some diamonds.

*****

Ota oppia sarjasta The Killing.

Feeding body and soul

While in Toronto the days were so packed that I had only two hours of free time on Tuesday evening. I hit the mall, naturally, and went to the four shops I wanted to go. It was so efficient attack to the stores that even the Navy Seals would be impressed :D I did hear this distant "nooooooooo" every time my credit card was swiped :D

The few days were also all about food. I had my lunches in this pretty cool distillery restaurant. Fish and chips, fried chicken. As healthy as always!

I was able to talk my CEO into a diner for breakfast. As you all might know, I have a soft spot for diners. And waffles. And pancakes. Yummy!!

We didn't have any time for sightseeing. This is the only picture after the one from downtown that I managed to take. And it's ruined by my reflection, of course.

I didn't even have time to go to the Tim Horton's and get my apple fritter! Luckily there was one at the airport and on the very last possible moment I made yet another attack and got what my belly desired.

*****

Fish and chips, friteerattua kanaa. Yhtä terveellistä kuin aina!

Onnistuin puhumaan pomoni aamupalalle dineriin.

Business class

So I have returned from Toronto. It was a quick trip as I mentioned, only four days. We left on Monday and arrived on Friday morning. As I was traveling with my boss and he flies in business, also I got to fly in business. Oh boy it was sweet!! It was very spacious and the menu naturally included starter, main course (four options to choose from), cheese and dessert. And of course you got wine if you wanted. I took one glass of white wine, or so I thought. In the end it felt like half of a bottle - they just poured the big glass to the top like it was juice! And I don't want to waste anything, so of course I had to drink it... Hiccup.

Like I said before, I like the humming of Toronto. It has the humming of a big city that for example Munich barely has. I like how the downtown looks like in the dark. More of Toronto to come up on the following days!

*****

Hik.

Kuten olen sanonut ennenkin, pidän Toronton huminasta.

Toys, tires and travels

I can't really be sure if the Finover has passed already, but as usual, life does go on. As my new toys have brought me joy, they also need certain things to keep bringing me joy. Even though the motorbiking season is longer here, it became the time to take my beloved Brutale to winter storage. She will spend the next few months at the same shop where she was originally bought from and they will take good care of her performing "hibernation maintenance" as well as spring maintenance when it's time. I'm planning of taking her to the roads in March. It is so very empty at my home without the puppies, and it is so very empty at the sidewalk too where I used to keep my Brutale.

I have only one darling left, which is my Furioza. She also needs to be taken care of, so now she has her winter tires on and we are ready for the snow to fall.

As I'm traveling again to Toronto next week, I took my team for a team lunch last week. My team is very small as you can see... We had a blast and I'm happy to call these girls and guys my team! I will return to my blog perhaps when in Toronto, but at the latest after my return.

*****

Koska matkustan jälleen Torontoon ensi viikolla, vein tiimini tiimilounaalle viime viikolla. Tiimini on hyvin pieni kuten huomaatte...

Finover

We all know what a hangover is.

Some of us also know what a bookover is. To those of us who don't know, I use that word to describe the feeling when you've finished a great book and you would like to start a new one, but you can't because the recent one was so good that you're afraid there will never be a book as good. So you have a book-hangover, aka bookover.

Now I can introduce a new word: Finover. It's the hangover you get when you visit Finland for a few days, spend time with your friends and live the life you used to live in Finland. Then you come back to Germany, and even though you know the gloominess will come, you are still not prepared for how heavy it hits you. For a short while you have a life, your friends who's known you for 20 years or even longer. And for a short while you remember how easy everything was, how you never felt lonely, how every single thing wasn't a massive task.

Then you come back to Germany. Back to your life that is here now, without the friends from years back, without things being easy, without not feeling lonely. It makes your life gloomy, and the longer you stay in Finland, the longer the Finover lasts. It's a heavy price to pay, and I don't know when, if ever, it will come lesser. Sometimes I can't help but to think if it's even too heavy price to pay. What if it will be like this even years from now?

It's also very tiring to feel retarded all the time. I go to my German classes twice a week, and my teacher says we're making good progress. Not faster than most, but not slower either. Still I feel like my brain is this black hole: they suck everything in, but when it's time to give something out, absolutely nothing happens. Somebody speaks to me, and even if by some miracle I even understand it, not a single word comes out.

Relocation is not always sunshine and happiness. Sometimes it's the opposite. All I can do is to keep clinging on the hope of life settling down. With a little bit of luck, little bit of hope and a lot of work.

*****

Me kaikki tiedämme mikä krapula on.

Niinpä sinulla on kirjakrapula.

Sitten tulet takaisin Saksaan.

Last day in Finland

As everything must come to an end, so did my time in Finland. On Tuesday, which was my last day, I was able to meet again this one man whom I met a lot when I was still in Finland. We met while walking our dogs, and as I have mentioned before, he became a huge support while I was going through a divorce and being laid off. He again had his camera with him, and he took few really nice pictures. Paavo, thank you again. For everything.

The weather was surprisingly nice, but below zero. This obviously meant that my girls got to wear their pink jackets and be pink packages!

Later during the day I met a dear friend, and took care of my shopping. It was a lot of chocolate and cheese I needed to bring with me back to Germany... In the evening it was time to say goodbye. My tiny furry babies will stay in Finland at least until the end of the year. We are moving at work, and the rooms we're going to, are not suitable for tiny dogs. It would only increase their stress level, just as much as mine. I'm also traveling to Toronto again, so it was the best option for them to stay behind. I will miss them terribly as they are my family. Hirmu and Hannibal, be good girls and remember that mummy is thinking you all the time.

*****

Lisäksi matkustan jälleen Torontoon, joten niille paras vaihtoehto on jäädä Suomeen. Tulen kaipaamaan heitä hirveästi sillä he ovat perheeni.

Monday in Tallinn

Monday we took the ferry and went to Tallinn with my friend. This is something we have done traditionally few times a year, but now that I've been in Germany, we haven't been able to go there for obvious reasons. Finally we had a chance going there again! There was a new port in the harbor that had opened almost a year ago. This describes well how quiet it is at this time of the year:

It felt like we were the only people in the world after apocalypse :D After arrival we went straight to our main target: Karnaluks. It's this huge arts and crafts supply store within walking distance from the harbor. It's one of my favourite shops of all time and I could spend there forever. To our astonishment they had acquired more space and if they were previously huge, now they are gigantic.

Then we headed to a shopping mall, but came out empty handed. The weather was just terrible. It wasn't raining (much), but the wind was straight from the north pole and stormy. I was happy to hop on a bus and go straight to the harbor again!

*****

Sunday in Finland

Saturday was a busy day, but so was Sunday. I took my godsons to the movies (traditionally) and afterwards we went for burgers (traditionally). We saw Cars 3 and I have to say I liked that a lot. It was a proper movie with a proper script, although I still hate the design of the cars. The whole concept of talking cars is very weird for me, but I can see the commercial possibilities which have yielded to my understanding crazy profits. Of course we took a selfie with my boys.

The boys didn't like the movie as much as I did, no doubt because the script was more of an adult taste. Luckily there is nothing that McDonald's can't make better!

Later in the afternoon I met one of my friends in downtown. Tomorrow we're going to Tallinn (also traditionally) and we stayed in a hotel. Fancy! We did go for my second burger of the day to Friends 'n Burgers. Was good and the garlic aioli had actually almost enough garlic! Not bad!

Saturday in Finland

I have certain things in Finland that I always do or get. Donuts from Arnold's is one of these things. Original White Chocolate is my thing.

Even though the weather sucked ass in Finland, the company didn't. I had a blast with my friends, as usually. We met with Sirkku, and took a quick selfie. See how long my hair is?! Maybe I should cut it :D

In the evening I saw other friends and of course me and the kids took another selfie. Eve and Markus, thanks for the dinner! Maj and Nooa, thanks for keeping me entertained :D

*****

Minulla on tiettyjä juttuja Suomessa joita aina teen tai hankin. Arnoldsin donitsit ovat yksi näistä jutuista. Originaali Valkoinen Suklaa on meitsin juttu.

F*ck you, Finland

Why the provocative headline? As I mentioned, I went to Finland for a few days and I have to say that if universe is trying to tell me that I should not return (like EVER), I heard the message loud and clear. The weather was everything that I hate, that I have always hated the most. It snowed prior my arrival, and while I was there it was raining. It was wet, dirty, gloomy, dark and freaking cold. Look at this!

And the packing was a nightmare. In Munich it was still +15 degrees and summer tires. What an earth do you pack with you when you have survive in that specific Finnish weather?? Plus I had to remember to pack with me also stuff for the puppies!

*****

Miksi provosoiva otsikko?
