Still at home

As I mentioned in my last blog, I was a little worried about returning to work on Monday. Even though I was feeling otherwise kind of ok, the meds were just as heavy as before. I was still dizzy, I still had problems focusing my eyes and it felt like I was in a haze. However, I did go to the studio in the morning, but I didn't make more than couple of hours when I had to call my doctor again. I got an appointment for the same day, and after I explained my problems, I needed to still stay at home for the rest of the week.

Detoxing from the meds was a question mark - the pain meds were meant for chronic pain and preventing epilepsia! I had no desire to keep taking these kind of meds, and after few days I actually went cold turkey. Yes, the doctor at the hospital had warned against doing that, but come on: epilepsia meds?! Dizziness, constant haze and unfocused eyes? F*ck that sh*t. It took few days for the meds to clear out of my system, but come Friday I was finally starting to feel like myself again. I was able to think, to see, just to be me. The pain also stayed away despite cutting off the meds. It was safe to say that I was finally ok.

So what did I do during this last week at home? Pretty much the same as before. I watched more series from Amazon and Netflix (finished few that have been left in the middle for quite some time) and finished my second crocheted shawl. Same pattern as before, Lost in Time (copyright @mijocrochet), but a different yarn.

And the puppies have probably had the best time of their life. Two full weeks cuddling in the sofa non-stop in mummy's lap! What could possibly be better??

This weekend we were busy. We had ordered a sideboard from Amazon already several weeks ago, but some parts were broken and we had to wait until they arrived that we could finally assembly it. The parts came this week, and today we spent several hours putting it together. It was a shitty piece to assembly, and people might say what they want for Ikea stuff, but at least their manuals are super clear and super simple. Unlike this sideboard's manual. But, it's built, and finally I also was able to empty all the clutter from my atelier as everything finally has a place! Now the atelier needs only paint in one wall and the new curtains, and then it's all ready. But now I have all the space I need to start sewing my new jacket and new purse. Lots of new ideas! I also ordered a brand new mannequin to use for my sewing.

Kuten mainitsin viime blogissani, olin hieman huolissani paluustani töihin maanantaina.

Sama malli kuin aiemmin, Lost in Time (copyright @mijocrochet), mutta eri lanka.

Paljon uusia ideoita! Tilasin myös upouuden mallinuken ompelua varten.

Recovering

So, I had to stay at home whole week after being released from the hospital. In truth I'm a bit uncertain how the return to work will be tomorrow, but I will at least try. There is stuff to do for sure, but of course I have be careful not to risk my health. The pain medication is going on strong, and during the week it has made me still seriously dizzy. I'll aim to go to the studio and then take it from there - if it doesn't feel like a good fit, I'll pay another visit to the doctor to discuss options.

As I mentioned, I spent my recovery week at the sofa. I crocheted my second shawl, and I watched several episodes of Homeland. Puppies were keeping great company and they were with me at the sofa non stop. Like this.

I realized to my horror that I ran out of salmiakki, licorice. Since my next trip to Finland will be only at the end of March, I possibly can't wait until that. So, one of my colleagues told me where he orders his candy from, and I did some online shopping. Look at these!!

During the weekend I did step up my game a little bit, and I made myself new nails. I wanted to try out some new things, and I'm pretty pleased with the outcome.

All snow had already melted, and I was thinking that super, I get to go to work with my bicycle again on Monday! Until this morning... This is how my man is doing the snow shoveling. He is practicing how to tolerate cold. I'm pretty sure our neighbors call us The Crazy Finns.

When it is snowing outside, the Mexican knows where to be.

*****

Kuten mainitsin, vietin toipilasviikkoni sohvalla.

Hospital, part 3

All in total I spent five days at the hospital. The doctors were pondering between a week and five days, but luckily enough I responded to the treatment well and my body was able to tolerate the heavy meds without problems. This meant that five days was enough and then I was able to go home. I still had to stay at home and recover for another week, but at least I was out from the hospital. All in total during these two weeks I finished one scarf, nearly finished second one and watched staggering SEVEN seasons of Homeland from Amazon! (I have to say that I'm now pretty fed up with terrorists, domestic and foreign, espionage, conspiracies and intriguing.)

As a private insurance holder I was supposed to be in a private room from the first day onwards. Unfortunately they were packed at the ward, and the first two or three days I had to stay in a double room. I shared the room with an older lady, and even though I do understand that she was probably quite lonely and definitely not in a very good shape, I do NOT understand why she felt it was better to wake me up in the middle of the goddamn night instead of calling for the nurses. There really isn't that much I can do to help get her up and take her to the toilet. In the end I called the nurses when she refused. Needless to say, I was pissed. It was bad enough that the nurses did change her diaper at midnight, and the morning IV came at 5am. Breakfast was brought already at 7am, so there wasn't actually chances for me to have a proper good night sleep.

The last few days I was able to stay in a private room. This was haven. No midnight calls, no changed diapers during the night. Of course the morning IV still came at 5am, but at least that was the only wake up call during the night.

As a private insurance holder I was also able to choose my menu out of five different options. I wasn't too optimistic since hospital food is always hospital food, but the food in this hospital was ridiculously poor. It didn't have enough protein, no fresh veggies and barely one piece of fresh fruits daily. The dinner was two pieces of bread and few slices of either cheese or ham. They served only one warm meal per day. It can of course be possible that there was again just something I was supposed to know (like where to get drinks - they didn't bring anything with the food, so I had only tap water until I asked that isn't there seriously anything else available? And only then they told me that oh yeah, you can have mineral water, tea or coffee but you have to get them yourself from a special room! Of course I KNEW that, like I KNOW everything that includes reading people's minds.) to get proper food, but if there was, it didn't dawn on me during the five days I stayed there. You can guess from the pictures below which one was breakfast, which lunch and which dinner.

My man came to see me every day. He took care of the puppies, and when we realized how bad the food was, he also brought me döner every day. He came to pick me up when I was released. He took such a good care of me! I did also have other visitors as well: couple of our friends stopped by in one evening and they brought a happy surprise with them: Spezi for me to drink! Also two of my colleagues came for a surprise visit which really brightened my day. They also brought a pretty flower with them.

And when my man picked me up from the hospital? These were waiting for me at home <3:

*****

He toivat myös kauniin kukkasen mukanaan.

Ja kun mieheni nouti minut sairaalasta? Nämä odottivat minua kotona <3:

Hospital, part 2

When I got back to the hospital, they started with the IV. They had to bring in the big guns and so started the first day of feeling non stop dizzy. The meds were so strong that they made me feel drunk without being drunk. When I was looking to the right, my eyes were still looking to the left. I wasn't able to read anything, hardly a Facebook update, as the lines and rows didn't stay in place but were jumping back and forth.

On top of the IV they were also giving me tablets. The primary virus infection was in my forehead and that was what the IV was for. Then there were the secondary infection in my right ear area which was a bacterial one. The primary infection was adulthood chickenpox as it was later confirmed. As the chickenpox virus lives in the nerves after you've had it as a child, it can sometimes resurface. If it comes back, it often comes back as shingles somewhere in the body, but in my case it emerged in my face. This caused it to be rather dangerous as it was very close to eyes, ears and brain. As the virus lives in the nerves, it can and usually does cause severe pain. This has to be treated because if it's not, the nerves can "learn" the pain and then there is no helping anymore but you're stuck with the nerve pain. Because of this the IV included heavy dose of pain medication so I was on a happy cloud day in, day out. Luckily enough I was able to watch series, though and crochet. That's what I did the next days.

Hospital, part 1

Couple of weeks ago I was thinking about writing a blog update, but I didn't really have much news to share. Life has evened out: the apartment is almost finished, everything is great between me and my man, the puppies are doing very well... Of course some work related stuff is always surfacing or bubbling under, but those are things I can't really speak freely about.

Well. About the same day when I was thinking what to write, I fell sick. At first I didn't think much of it. Just a little rash in the forehead, a little pain around my right ear - maybe again something to do with my jaw? And everybody has rashes from time to time, right? Then the rash didn't go away, and the pain in the ear just got worse. So bad that I wasn't even able to sleep, despite pain killers. This was on Sunday last week. On Monday (last week) I went to studio as I needed some help finding a doctor. The system here is still a bit unclear to me: how to make a doctor's appointment as I have had help earlier and hadn't really needed doctors that often. So, I got a doctor's appointment very quickly, and when she saw my face, she sent me immediately to a specialist. When he saw my face, he suspected adulthood chickenpox with primary virus infection in my forehead and secondary bacteria infection in my right ear area. He gave me a prescription for a few different medication, and wanted to see me again on Wednesday. He told me to call him if it gets worse during the night as he was expecting a little progress.

Tuesday morning came and there was no progress. On the contrary, it was getting worse: the blister area in my forehead had started to swell. So, I gave the doctor a call, he wanted to see me immediately and when I got there, he sent me directly to dermatology policlinic to be evaluated if I needed more serious treatment or if the medication I was already on would be sufficient.

The policlinic was an interesting experience. As I have been privately insured for almost a year now, different rules apply. First a security woman almost threw me out from the policlinic as the public part was already closed for the day when I got there. She obviously didn't speak English, and my German is too broken for me to be able to explain these kind of things. She did finally find a nurse to whom I explained my situation and showed the paper I had gotten from the doctor. She took one look at it, read the magic word "private" and sent me right away to a different part of the policlinic. That's where the emergency private patients were admitted. When I got there, a doctor saw me immediately and told me flat out: the situation was severe and they needed to take me in for a week. As the infection was in my face, and already in my ear area, the risk was apparently very high: it could easily spread to my eyes or to my brain. However, this whole ordeal with the public and private healthcare got me thinking that if I would've been insured by public care, I guess I would've had to wait one more day before getting to see a doctor, and what if it would've been too late at that point? It is very weird to have this split between the first class and the second class.

Anyhow, the policlinic doctor sent me upstairs to the ward where I was to be signed in, checked by doctors, some blood taken for first tests and then I could still go home and pack some stuff to have with me. That's what happened. It took a lot of time, of course. I waited at the ward, I waited for the nurses, I waited for the doctors, I waited for the blood tests... But in the end they were all done and I went home to pack my stuff. At that point I didn't have much time as they told me I should be back at the ward in a couple of hours. So, I rushed home, packed my stuff, kissed the puppies goodbye and took off again. I have spent too much time in the hospitals during my adulthood, and I really wasn't looking forward for this time either.

*****

No. Samana päivänä kun ajattelin kirjoittavani, sairastuin. Systeemi täällä on minulle edelleen hieman epäselvä: kuinka saadaan aika lääkärin vastaanotolle sillä olen saanut siihen aina apua enkä ole tarvinnut lääkäriä kovinkaan usein.

Winter

Winter has finally arrived to Germany. I've been still using my bicycle up until last Wednesday when I finally had to give in. It's been snowing some, then melting, then snowing again and it just got too slippery. We also had a snowstorm at the end of the week and even though it's been raining today and the snow is melting, for a few days we had a real winter. We even had to go and buy a snow shovel, and it came to use already because the puppies needed pathways in the garden. Hopefully in a week or two I can take my bicycle out again for I really don't like the (over)crowded subway.

I also took on a new arts and crafts project. I decided I need a new scarf (hah!) and there is this one pattern I've been wanting to try for probably years now. It's been a lazy Sunday with some summer yarn and a crochet hook. As the puppies woke us up already after 6am, I could've been more efficient with for example painting the walls, but instead I've been hooked on hooking!

*****

Talvi on vihdoin saapunut Saksaan. Kuljin edelleen aina viime keskiviikkoon saakka polkupyörälläni jolloin jouduin vihdoin luovuttamaan.

Puppies and dentals

Shortly before Christmas we took the puppies to the vet to get their dentals taken care of. Hannibal has been grumpier than usual, so we figured that it might be there is something in her teeth that is bothering her as in every other way she seem to be completely ok. Their annual dentals would have happened anyways at the latest early February, so it was a good time to go to the vet.

As it turned out, Hannibal had infected teeth and they had to remove four from the back of her mouth. It doesn't seem to be periodontitis which is a good thing. Everything went well with her anesthesia and all in all she was recovering quickly.

Hirmu on the other hand had severe problems. During her anesthesia she stopped breathing and it took quite a lot of work for the vet to get her breathing again on her own. When the vet called me and explained what was the situation, I thought that my heart would stop. Hirmu is only six years old and other than her teeth, is healthy as a horse. Both of my puppies are very dear to me, but Hirmu is my precious, has always been. My world will collapse when I have to say goodbye to her, and I definitely were not ready to do that just yet. Luckily in the end Hirmu started breathing again on her own and the crisis was averted. They had to remove three tooth which means that she now has only five left. The vet is optimistic that we will now have more time before the next operation is needed for Hirmu. When that time comes we will have a new problem. Since Hirmu has stopped breathing once, it is likely this will happen again if anesthesia is used. I don't know, however, what is or even can be the alternative. Her teeth will become a problem at some point; as long as she has even one tooth left, the periodontitis will eat its way through it. Well. It does not do any good to worry about the future. We will cross the bridge when it's time for it. Right now we will focus on her happiness and making sure both of them have everything they need.

The operation took a toll on both of the puppies. Both had antibiotics, both had pain killers and both were tired. After a few days they started to be themselves again, but it was a good thing Christmas holiday was just around the corner and we were all able just rest.

Operaatio otti voimille molemmilla.
